Biomedical Engineering

Department of Engineering

The Engineering Department has recently launched a part-time PgCert/PgDip/MSt course on Healthcare Innovation: Engineering, Systems and Improvement, with the first students enrolled to start in September 2023. Students taking the course will be equipped with the skills necessary to understand how biomedical engineering impacts upon populations, health conditions and clinical outcomes, and learn how to work across the boundaries of engineering, design and healthcare in an effective manner. The aim of the UROP employment supported by the ECP grant is to work up details of the practical elements in the introductory and Healthcare Technology modules within the PgCert course. The first Healthcare Technology module has three sections - biomaterials, biofabrication and sensors - covering core topics in healthcare technology and the UROP students will develop lab activities based around these topics. In a second element of the project, the UROP students will survey a range of technical papers in the subject areas of biomaterials, biofabrication and sensors, identifying key papers which highlight important topics in these areas but also link in with the practical elements. They will write a short report on these papers, providing a working document to focus discussion sessions on the PgCert course.
