Control Engineering Challenges for Future Railway Vehicles

Abstract. Although railways have encountered a resurgence over the last two decades, there are still major challenges to ensure cost-effective and sustainable development. These challenges apply to the railway system as a whole, but the talk will focus upon railway vehicles. The lecture will provide an overview of the key vehicle sub-systems and associated trends arising from these business imperatives, before moving on to identify technological opportunities to which control can contribute, and a discussion of the associated research requirements.
